The BC Building Code 2024 came into effect March 8, 2024, with in-stream projects given until March 8, 2027. The BC Codes do not apply in the City of Vancouver, which has its own building by-law. Everywhere else, the local authority having jurisdiction decides how the code applies to a permit.

BC Housing’s residential builder licence is for people building new homes: general contractors, developers and building envelope renovators. Its building envelope renovation rules do not apply to buildings with only one or two units.

Since August 1, 2026, BC bans door-to-door sales of certain household products, such as furnaces, heat pumps, water heaters and solar systems; roofing is not on that list. A customer can still cancel a door-to-door contract for any reason within 10 days of receiving a copy, and the deposit is capped at $100 or 10% of the price, whichever is less.

A fall protection system is required where a worker could fall 3 m (10 ft) or more, or less where the landing raises the risk of injury. A business that hires one or more workers must register with WorkSafeBC.
