Roofing in Ottawa
What an Ottawa roofing contractor works under
Ottawa’s Building Code Services issues permits under the Ontario Building Code, and the City sets its own road-use and noise rules. These come from the City of Ottawa’s pages; Ontario-wide rules are on the Ontario page.
Asphalt re-shingling is exempt, except on heritage properties
The City lists installing asphalt shingles on a roof among projects that do not need a building permit, though the work must still comply with the Ontario Building Code. Designated heritage buildings and buildings in a Heritage District Overlay do not get the exemption. The list names asphalt shingles only, so ask the City about other materials.

Structural roof work needs a permit, and you share the liability
Structural repairs or alterations and roof-top storm water retention systems are on the City’s list of projects that need a permit. The owner must make sure a permit is obtained, and the City says the owner and the contractor are equally liable under the Ontario Building Code Act.

No City roofing licence
Roofing is not on the City of Ottawa’s list of business types it licenses; the contractor licences on that list are for hardscaping and snow plowing. Ontario does not license roofers either.

Bins on the road and noise hours
Storing materials or equipment on a City road, boulevard or sidewalk, including a roll-off bin in the roadway or a public laneway, needs a temporary construction-related encroachment permit. Construction work is not allowed Monday to Saturday between 10 pm and 7 am, or on Sundays and statutory holidays between 10 pm and 9 am.
